Art Gallery Jobs

For people who love art or who have studied art, working in a gallery may be the perfect profession, and depending on where you live and work, it may be possible to do without a college degree in art or art history.

Art galleries need a number of different types of employees and in some cases, its a one man show of sorts. Theres usually a receptionist who also handles emailing, mailing lists and other administrative duties. If its a larger gallery in a big city, that person is usually at their desk. There will be people who install the shows and sometimes they are gallery employees if not contract workers. There are employees to handle the art and/or deliver purchases if they are unusually large. Some galleries have branches that handle picture framing and crating and shipping which requires knowledge and skill of both carpentry as well as mat cutting and the handling of expensive artworks. If the gallery is large enough, there might be room for an assistant to the dealer who also sells during busy periods of time. Everything depends on where the gallery is located and how much business it does. In the case of small galleries, a couple of people do all of the above so even though the gallery isnt as busy or the artwork quite as expensive, it still means the employee must be able to multi-task and do it well. In large cities at big busy galleries, there would also be at least part time opportunities for those who can do digital imaging and even photoshop work for the gallery. It really pays to make the rounds in urban areas and know how to sell yourself.

For anyone who has an undergraduate degree, the pay might not be what you expect but the rewards and experience is great. art show
